What is the Kimura Technique?
The Kimura, also known as the double wristlock, is a submission technique commonly used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and mixed martial arts (MMA). It is named after Masahiko Kimura, a Japanese judoka who famously defeated Helio Gracie, one of the founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with this technique in a historic match.
The Kimura involves controlling one of the opponent's arms, usually by grabbing the wrist, and then manipulating it into a vulnerable position by leveraging pressure against the shoulder joint. The attacker typically secures the opponent's wrist with one hand and then grasps their own wrist with the other hand to create a powerful grip. By applying torque to the opponent's shoulder joint while keeping control of their wrist, the attacker can force the opponent to submit or risk serious injury.
The Kimura can be executed from various positions, including from the top or bottom in side control, guard, or even from standing positions. It's a versatile technique that requires good leverage, control, and timing to apply effectively.
